Question 1:

I have a small network in my office with 3 computers all with windows 98 2 Edition. The three computers are equipped with Ethernet cards and connected using Ethernet cable to a hub. I have already setup file sharing on all three computers. On one of the computers I have attached an HP DeskJet printer connected via parallel port. I would like to configure the other two computers so that I can print from those two computers. How do configure the three computers so that I can print from any computer. Please be specific, and give step by step directions about how I should configure each computer.

Answer

First of all you need to "share" the printer. If I can remember correctly you do that by right clicking on the printer and go to properties and share it there.

At the other 2 machines that you wanted to print from;

Start --> Settings --> Printers -->Add Printer

The Add Printer Wizard will pop up at this point.

These are the steps you take there.

Hit the first "Next" --> Network Printer --> at this point you will get an option to Browse the network, find the machine the printer is installed on, double click on it and find the printer, click OK. Your next step might be to choose the printer and driver, choose what you have and follow the rest of the steps through to the end. A test page should print at that point.

Remember that the machine with the printer should be on at all times. HP Jet Direct software enables other machines in a workgroup to print without having to have the machine that has the printer installed on. It might be something worth looking into.
